Raising Alpacas

Some background information for anyone contemplating raising alpacas. These animals require limited attention and can thrive on any type of pasture.

  • Average lifespan : 15 - 20 years

  • Origins : South America

  • Breeding life : 12 cria per female

  • Average height : 1 metre at the shoulder

  • Average weight : 60-80 kgs

  • Fibre : softer, lighter and stronger than wool

  • Fibre production : 3 to 4kgs average per animal (one shearing annually)

  • Price per kg : NZ$35 (approx US$15, £10.30, 17 EUR) - price varies depending on quality

  • Colour : 22 basic colours

  • Gestation : 11.5 months

  • Offspring : one cria (baby) every 14-15 months.

  • Diet : grass, hay and occasional supplements

  • Stock rate : 4 to 5 alpacas per acre depending on soil type

  • Communication : alpacas express themselves with a soft "humm"

  • Hembra : female alpaca

  • Machos : male alpaca
